Leanders
Tower |
  |
This is a small and
attractive tower built on an islet at the entrance to the Bosphorus.
It is one of the symbols of Istanbul. Used in the past as a
watchtower and a lighthouse. |
|
Golden
Horn & Pierre Loti |
  |
This horn-shaped
estuary divides European Istanbul. One of the best natural harbours
in the world, it was once the centre for the Byzantine and Ottoman
navies. |
|
Bosphorus from Asia |
  |
First gazed upon the
Bosphorus over a full moon from high up at the top of the hill in
Arnavurkoy. It was in September 2000. I cannot forget that sight. |

Sultanahmet |
  |
The most important monumental buildings of the city are found in this section of old Istanbul. Ever since the Roman period, the imperial buildings and sanctuaries were situated there. Where Sultanahmet mosque (the "Blue Mosque") stands today, imperial palaces had stood, and Topkapi Palace stands atop the Roman Acropolis. The great cathedral Hagia Sophia of the Byzantine emperors still stands near Sultanahmet mosque.Sultanahmet is the mosque only mosque in the world with six minarets. All these monuments remain in place, with the exception of the famed equestrian statues that once adorned the square and were later carried off by the Crusaders to Venice where they still stand in St. Mark's Cathedral square. |
|
Galata
Tower |
  |
Galata Tower has dominated Beyoglu's
skyline since 1348 and still offers the best panoramic views of the
city.
Originally named the Tower of Christ, it was the highpoint in the
city walls of the Genoese colony called Galata. The walls are long
gone, but the great tower remains.
Until the 1960s it was a fire lookout tower. Now the upper floors
hold an uninteresting restaurant-nightclub, and a panorama balcony.
The panorama balcony, encircling the highest row of windows, is
narrow, open to the weather, and not recommended for anyone
suffering from acrophobia (fear of heights).

Taksim & Istiklal Street |
  |
The Istiklal Street starts with the
statute of Ataturk in Taksim Square. The prominent landmark of
Taksim Square is the Marmara Hotel, a tall building which is another
meeting place for the people. The Istiklal Street is a pedestrian
street which is approximately 3-4 km. long. There are cozy cafés,
restaurants, shops, bookstores, movie theaters, music stores on this
street. Most of the movie theaters are located here. There are small
back streets where you can discover little but friendly cafés. |
|
Istiklal Street |
  |
Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue)
is the heart of Beyoglu, the more modern district of Istanbul built
during the 19th century.
The city's most popular strolling, shopping and snacking street, now
reserved for pedestrians, is lined with boutiques, cafes,
consulates, restaurants, galleries, cinemas and banks, with
residential apartments above.
Come in the daytime for shopping, in the evening for strolling,
people-watching, supper in one of the many restaurants, a drink in a
cafe or bar, and some music in a little nightspot. |
|
Grandbazaar |
  |
The Grand Bazaar consists of 4,000 shops on a series of covered streets leading to a central avenue. The oldest sections are the Sandal Bedesten (cloth auction) and Cevahir Bedesten (jewelry market).
The streets are named according to the trades, such as gold and silver sellers, carpet sellers, slipper sellers, bootsellers, booksellers, pursemakers, etc. The most oriental atmosphere in Istanbul is found in the bazaar, which also houses many good restaurants and cafes.
